These are hybrids that are more resistant to winter cold, shorter in stature and extremely frost-resistant, making them suitable for areas where it is too cold for classic Canadian blueberries (Northern Highbush).
Name: Highbush blueberry x Lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum × Vaccinium angustifolium)
Origin: These are hybrids created by crossing the northern highbush blueberry with the wild lowbush blueberry. The aim was to combine the fruit size of the Northern Highbush with the extreme frost resistance and compact growth of the Lowbush.
Characteristic features
Growth: Compact, dense shrub with a height of 0.6-1.2 meters. Ideal for smaller gardens, container cultivation, or harsher climatic conditions.
Fruit: Medium-sized (smaller than Northern Highbush, but larger than Lowbush), often with a very intense, slightly "wild" and complex flavor.
Cold requirements: High, similar to northern varieties (800+ hours).
Frost resistance: Excellent. They can withstand frosts of -35 °C to -45 °C. They are the best choice for mountainous and subalpine areas . Well-known varieties include 'Northland', 'Northblue', 'Polaris' and 'Patriot'.
