New Apples 2026: Alesya, Avenarius & Dejavu (Eastern Europe)
Golden Heritage and Columnar Innovation: Introducing 'Alesya', 'Avenarius', and 'Dejavu' Apples
For the Spring 2026 season (sales May/June), we looked east and north again, to countries where apple trees must face harsh conditions. There we found three gems: a modern Belarusian variety that lasts in the cellar until May, a legendary Russian apple with candy flavor, and a Latvian novelty that fits even on a balcony.
“The 'Avenarius' variety is a living legend. It was bred more than 100 years ago near St. Petersburg and is still sought after today for its unique, purely sweet taste almost without acidity.”
1. 'Alesya': The Belarusian Storage Miracle
This late winter variety from the Belarusian institute is the answer to the question: "Which apple lasts until the new harvest?" It originated from crossing 'Belorusskoe malinovoe' x 'Bananovoe' and is intended for those who want to eat their own apples all year round.
Quality That Lasts
Harvested in September/October, but its time comes later. In storage, it lasts in perfect condition until May. The fruits are medium to large (180 g), bright red and shiny. The flesh is fresh, creamy, and juicy.
Ideal for Small Growers
'Alesya' has weak growth ("spur" type) and a compact crown, so it doesn't take up much space. It is highly frost-hardy and has polygenic resistance to scab, which means minimal need for spraying.
2. 'Avenarius' (Sugar Apple): The Sweet Heritage of Tsars
If you don't like sour apples, this is the variety for you. 'Avenarius' (also known as 'Cukuriņš' or Lithuanian Sugar) is an old Russian summer apple variety grown since the 19th century.
Taste of Pure Sugar
It is a true "children's" apple. It contains up to 16% sugar and almost no acids, creating a specific, honey-sweet taste (rated 4.5/5). The fruits are smaller, white-yellow with a pink blush, and ripen in mid-summer.
Indestructible Tree
This tree survives everything. It withstands frosts down to -40 °C and is highly resistant to diseases. It is undemanding to soil, but you have to count on stronger growth and short shelf life of fruits (they are eaten straight from the tree).
3. 'Dejavu': Latvian Elegance for a Pot
From the Latvian station Pūre comes the modern answer to lack of space – the columnar variety 'Dejavu'. It is proof that you can grow quality fruit even on 1 square meter.
Beautiful and Useful
The tree grows strictly columnar up to a height of 2-3 meters, with a width not exceeding 1 meter. In August, it is covered with medium-sized, bright red to maroon fruits. The taste is pleasant, mild, and aromatic.
Cultivation: It is resistant to frost, drought, and diseases. Ideal for balconies, terraces, or as a hedge in a small garden.
Big Comparison: Which One to Choose?
| Feature | Alesya | Avenarius | Dejavu |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type | Winter "Spur" | Summer historical | Summer columnar |
| Taste | Harmonious, fresh | Extremely sweet | Mild, sweet-sour |
| Storage | Until May | Eat immediately | Short |
| Resistance | High (scab) | Extreme (frost -40°C) | Complex |
Conclusion
Each of these varieties has its clear purpose. 'Alesya' fills your cellar for the winter, 'Avenarius' delights children with sweetness in the summer, and 'Dejavu' brings a harvest even where a normal tree wouldn't fit. All three share Eastern European resilience and adaptation to demanding conditions.
