Russian Dessert White and Romanian Red Classic: Introducing 'Bayana', 'Margaritar', and 'Abundent' Currants
Russian Dessert White and Romanian Red Classic: Introducing 'Bayana', 'Margaritar', and 'Abundent' Currants
For the 2026 season (sales April/May), we have prepared an interesting mix of white and red currants from the East. White currant is often underestimated, but the Russian novelty 'Bayana' changes the rules of the game with its exceptional sweetness. From Romania, varieties come that are synonymous with reliability and rich harvest.
“White currants are often more acidic, but 'Bayana' is an exception. In Russian tasting tests, it received almost full points (4.8 out of 5), ranking it among the tastiest dessert varieties ever.”
1. 'Bayana': The White Queen of Taste
This late Russian variety from the VNIISPK institute (registered in 2007) is the result of crossing 'Rote Spätlese' and 'Red Lake'. It is the clear choice for those looking for sweet "snacking" straight from the bush.
Tastes Like Dessert
The berries are medium-sized, white, transparent, and arranged in long, dense strigs (up to 12 cm!). The taste is excellent, sweet-sour, dessert-like. Thanks to its high pectin content, it is also great for making jelly.
Health and Resilience
The bush grows vigorously and is highly resistant to frost, drought, and powdery mildew. The only weakness may be the currant aphid, so monitoring for this pest is recommended.
2. 'Margaritar': Romanian Gold
From Romania comes the variety 'Margaritar', known for its golden-yellow fruits. It is a reliable worker for every garden, bearing regularly and abundantly (3–6 kg per bush).
Lasts Long on the Bush
A huge advantage of this variety is that the fruits do not drop after ripening. You can leave them on the bush for a longer time and harvest gradually. They are medium to large, very shiny, and have a pleasant sweet-sour taste.
Resistance
It is a robust variety, resistant to frost and diseases. It is partially self-fertile, but for maximum yield, it is better to have another currant variety nearby.
3. 'Abundent': Red Abundance
The name of this Romanian variety says it all – 'Abundent' means abundant. It is a red currant that will not disappoint you with the amount of harvest.
Classic Red Taste
The berries are bright red, with thin and shiny skin. The taste is pleasant, tart, and very refreshing, exactly what you expect from a red currant. It is excellent for fresh consumption, but also for jams and syrups.
Cultivation
The bush has a spherical shape and very good resistance to diseases. It ripens mid-early (beginning of summer). Like 'Margaritar', 'Abundent' also benefits from the presence of a pollinator.
Big Comparison: Which One to Choose?
| Feature | Bayana | Margaritar | Abundent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Color | White / Transparent | Golden-yellow | Red |
| Taste | Dessert sweet | Sweet-sour | Tart, fresh |
| Ripening | Late | Long hanging on bush | Mid-early |

Conclusion
If you are looking for a currant that children will love, reach for the Russian novelty 'Bayana'. For those who want a stable harvest and a long harvesting period, there is 'Margaritar'. And if you need a classic red currant for processing, 'Abundent' is a safe bet.
