Romanian Trio of Summer and Autumn Pears: Introducing 'Daciana', 'Argessis', and 'Carpica'

For the Spring 2026 season (sales late April/May), we have prepared something special. These are three sister pear varieties created at the prestigious Romanian institute ICDP Piteşti – Mărăcineni by crossing the same parents: 'Napoca' and 'B.P. Morettini'.

Although they share a common genetic basis, each is unique. However, one thing unites them: they were bred with an emphasis on quality, resilience, and suitability for modern gardens.

“Having these three varieties in the garden means being supplied with quality pears from late July to September. They are ideal trees for growers who seek reliability and do not want to fight diseases.”

1. 'Daciana': The First Pear of Summer

If you love the taste of the first summer pears, 'Daciana' (registered in 1989) is the clear choice. It is one of the first quality varieties you can enjoy in the season.

Why 'Daciana'?

It is a record holder in productivity. It enters bearing early and bears exceptionally abundantly. The tree has medium growth and good affinity with quince, allowing cultivation even in smaller forms.

Summer Treat

It ripens as early as late July. The fruits are medium-sized (150 g) with yellow-orange skin and a red blush. The flesh is juicy, melting, and very tasty. However, they need to be eaten quickly – they last about 3 weeks after harvest.

Bonus: It is partially to fully self-fertile and withstands frost very well.

2. 'Argessis': The Red Beauty of August

When 'Daciana' is gone, 'Argessis' (registered in 1985) steps in. This variety fills the gap in the second half of August and brings not only taste but also color to the garden.

Visual and Taste Experience

The fruits of 'Argessis' are unmissable. More than half of their surface is covered in vibrant red color on a yellow-green background. The flesh is white, semi-melting, and refreshing.

Health Comes First

Ecological growers will love this variety. It is characterized by high resistance to scab and white leaf spot, minimizing the need for spraying. It blooms mid-late, thereby escaping spring frosts.

3. 'Carpica': The Autumn Certainty

The trio is closed by the autumn variety 'Carpica' (registered in 1989). It has adopted the best traits of both parents and offers stability and quality.

Ideal for Family Orchards

The tree grows medium to weaker, which is advantageous for smaller gardens. It enters bearing very early (already in the 2nd – 3rd year). The fruits are large (over 150 g), stouter, and have a delicious, creamy consistency.

Resistance and Storage

'Carpica' is highly resistant to frost, diseases, and pests. It is an autumn pear – harvested later and retains its quality in the refrigerator for up to 1.5 months, extending the season of domestic pears until the first frosts.

Conclusion

These three varieties are proof of the success of Romanian breeding. Whether you are looking for the first summer pear, a partner for a bio garden, or a stable autumn variety, 'Daciana', 'Argessis', and 'Carpica' are a safe bet. We recommend planting them together – not only do you ensure a harvest throughout the season, but thanks to mutual pollination (especially for Argessis and Carpica), you also achieve higher yields.
