Golden Treasures from Romania: Introducing 'Moldovenesti', 'Aromate', and 'Auriu' Quinces
Golden Treasures from Romania: Introducing 'Moldovenesti', 'Aromate', and 'Auriu' Quinces
The quince (Cydonia oblonga) is experiencing a renaissance in our gardens. It is no longer just the forgotten fruit of our grandmothers but a valued ingredient for gourmets. For the Spring 2026 season (expected sale April/May), we have prepared three exceptional varieties from the Romanian breeding station SCDP Târgu Jiu. They are characterized not only by beautiful fruits but also by high resilience, which is crucial for cultivation in our conditions.
“Romania is among the countries with ideal conditions for quinces. These varieties are the result of years of selection focused on intense aroma, fruit size, and durability.”
1. 'Moldovenesti': The Golden Sphere with Long Endurance
The variety 'Moldovenesti' (registered in 1982) is a natural hybrid from the Moldavia region. It is the ideal choice for those with less space in the garden.
Tree and Growth
It is characterized by weak growth, which is a great advantage for smaller gardens when it comes to quince. The crown is spherical and flattened.
Storage Champion
If you are looking for a quince that will last deep into winter, this is the one. The fruits are storable until January. They are medium-sized (270–330 g), spherical, and beautifully orange-golden.
Taste: The flesh is firm, crunchy, and aromatic, with a balanced ratio of sweetness and acidity.
2. 'Aromate': A Scent That Enchants
As the name suggests, the variety 'Aromate' (registered in 1982) is the queen of fragrance. It was created by selection from the well-known variety ‘Bereczki’. It is a more robust variety with stronger growth and an inverted pyramidal crown.
Typically Pear-Shaped
Unlike 'Moldovenesti', this variety has a pear-shaped fruit. The color is bright lemon-yellow. It ripens from mid-September to mid-October and lasts until Christmas (December).
Almost Without Stone Cells
A great advantage is the structure of the flesh. It contains only a small amount of stone cells, making its processing and consumption much more pleasant.
3. 'Auriu': The Giant for Jams
The variety 'Auriu' (registered in 1982) is another descendant of the ‘Bereczki’ variety. It is a tree for those who want a large harvest and really big fruits.
Impressive Fruits
The fruits are very large, reaching a weight of 450 to 500 grams. They have an asymmetric, round-pear shape and are ribbed. The color ranges from lemon to rich golden-yellow.
Ideal for Cooking
Its flesh is fine and crunchy with a slight tartness, which disappears with cooking and, on the contrary – the aroma is further enhanced by heat treatment. Therefore, 'Auriu' is the best choice for jams, jellies, and compotes.
Cultivation: It is an undemanding, frost-hardy, and disease-resistant variety that bears abundantly.
