Self-fertile and Resilient: Introducing the Sour Cherries 'Gerema', 'Nana', and 'Notė'
Self-fertile and Resilient: Introducing the Sour Cherries 'Gerema', 'Nana', and 'Notė'
For the Spring 2026 season (expected sale April/May or May/June depending on the country), we have selected three sour cherry varieties that share one key feature – they don't need much space or a pollination partner. We bring German precision, Romanian adaptability, and Lithuanian aroma directly to your gardens.
“The 'Gerema' variety is the German breeders' answer to Monilinia. It is a modern sour cherry that not only bears large and firm fruits but also requires minimum chemical protection thanks to its resistance.”
1. 'Gerema': German Firmness
This modern German variety (bred in 1999) is ideal for those struggling with tree diseases. It originated from crossing 'Kelleriis 14' × 'Heimanns Rubinweichsel', and its main advantage is resistance to Monilinia and leaf spot.
Large and Crack-Resistant
The fruits are large (6 g), dark crimson, and very firm. Thanks to the firmer flesh, they are resistant to cracking even during rains. The taste is harmonious and sweet. An advantage is that the tree blooms very late, thus avoiding spring frosts.
For Small Gardens
'Gerema' has weak growth, so it fits into smaller spaces. It is self-fertile and bears fruit very early and abundantly.
2. 'Nana': Romanian Adaptability
From the research station in Băneasa comes the variety 'Nana'. It is a tree that can adapt. Whether you have ideal soil or not, 'Nana' will manage.
Undemanding and Early
It is characterized by weak to medium growth and a spherical crown. It is an early variety (harvest as early as June 15–25). The fruits are medium-sized (up to 8 g), dark red, and shiny. The taste is pleasant, tart to sweet-sour.
Excellent Pollinator
'Nana' is not only partially self-fertile but also serves as an excellent pollinator for other sour cherry varieties in the orchard. It is highly resistant to frost and diseases.
3. 'Notė': Lithuanian Aroma
From Lithuania, we bring the variety 'Notė', which is valued for its reliability and taste. It is a self-fertile variety that bears fruit annually and abundantly.
Excellent Taste
The fruits ripen in the second half of July. They are medium-sized, dark red, with firm and juicy flesh. What distinguishes it is the excellent, aromatic sweet-sour taste. The stone separates easily from the flesh, which you will appreciate when canning.
Frost Hardiness
As befits a Nordic variety, 'Notė' is highly frost-hardy (down to -29 °C), and its flower buds resist spring frosts well. However, it requires better quality soil and a sunny location.
Big Comparison: Which One to Choose?
| Feature | Gerema | Nana | Notė |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ripening | Turn of June/July | Mid-June (Early) | 2nd half of July |
| Pollination | Self-fertile | Partially self-fertile | Self-fertile |
| Resistance | Resistant (Monilinia) | High | Frost-hardy |
| Origin | Germany | Romania | Lithuania |
Conclusion
If you are looking for a resistant sour cherry with firm fruits, 'Gerema' is the right choice. For those who need an early and undemanding variety, 'Nana' is ideal. And if you love the specific aromatic taste of Nordic fruit, 'Notė' will delight you.
