Centurion is a variety from the University of Georgia and USDA program, introduced in 1978. It was created by crossing the Tifblue and Woodard varieties. Its main breeding goal was to create a very late variety that would further extend the harvest season after Tifblue ripens.
Fruits (Quality and characteristics): The fruits are large, dark blue, firm, and have a good taste. Their quality is solid and reliable, without any significant defects, but their main advantage is not some unique characteristic, but rather the timing of their ripening.
Plant (Cultivation characteristics): The shrub grows very vigorously and has a distinctly upright, almost columnar habit, which facilitates pruning and harvesting. It is highly productive. Its key characteristic is very late ripening, making it one of the latest Rabbiteye varieties ever. Its chilling requirements are slightly lower than those of Tifblue, estimated at 500 to 550 hours. Like all Rabbiteyes, it is cross-pollinated and requires a late-blooming pollinator such as Tifblue or Powder Blue.
Advantages and disadvantages: The main advantage is its extremely late ripening, which allows the season to be extended to the maximum, and its strong, upright growth. The disadvantage may be precisely this very late ripening in areas with shorter summers, where the fruits may not have time to ripen before the arrival of autumn frosts.
