Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides)

Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is a shrub or small tree particularly popular for its berries - small orange or yellow berries that are a rich source of nutrients. Sea buckthorn is particularly valued for its high vitamin C content, which can be up to 10 times higher than in lemons. In addition, it contains vitamins A, E, K, group B, flavonoids, minerals (iron, potassium, magnesium) and essential omega fatty acids. Its fruits are used in medicine, food and cosmetics. It has strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and regenerative effects, promotes immunity, digestion, skin and blood vessel health. In traditional medicine it is used to treat stomach problems, burns and skin diseases. Even within many domestic recipes in Slovakia, we know quite a few recipes for the use of its health effects. 


Sea buckthorn is easy to grow, resists frost and drought, and is able to grow on nutrient-poor soils. It is therefore often used to restore degraded areas. It requires a sunny position and flowers in May, with fruit ripening in autumn. Sea buckthorn should not be planted close to house foundations because of the possibility of root expansion. It is a species with significant ecological and economic benefits, gaining increasing popularity for its health benefits
