Akebia

Akebia quinata (five-leaf akebia) and Akebia trifoliata (three-leaf akebia) are woody, deciduous to semi-deciduous vines from the Lardizabalaceae family, native to East Asia. Botanically, they differ in their leaves: while A. quinata has palmate compound leaves with five leaflets, A. trifoliata has trifoliate leaves with wavy margins. They are monoecious plants with separate male and female flowers. The fruit is an elongated fleshy capsule that bursts lengthwise when ripe, revealing sweet, jelly-like, translucent pulp with numerous black seeds. Nutritionally, the pulp is a source of simple sugars and minerals (potassium, calcium), while the seeds are rich in healthy fats (oleic and linoleic acids). The bitter skin is consumed as a vegetable in Asia after processing. The phytochemical profile is specific for its high content of triterpenoid saponins (especially hederagenin and oleanolic acid), which are found in the stems and fruits and have significant diuretic and anti-inflammatory effects.
