Souvignier Gris is a modern pink grape variety that represents the future of sustainable viticulture. It is one of the most important and highest quality PIWI varieties, as it perfectly combines exceptional disease resistance with high-quality wine that is fully comparable to traditional European varieties.
This variety was bred in 1983 in Freiburg, Germany. Its genetic makeup gives it excellent resistance to major fungal diseases such as downy mildew and powdery mildew, as well as very good frost resistance. As a result, it requires minimal or no chemical protection, making it ideal for organic cultivation. It grows strongly and upright, and its medium-sized, sparse clusters bear berries with a typical pink-gray skin, which gave it the name "Gris". It ripens in the mid-late to late season, around the same time as Pinot Blanc.
However, the main reason for its growing popularity is the exceptional quality of the wine. It has a sparkling golden yellow color and its aroma develops elegant tones of green apple, pear, quince, and melon with a subtle touch of citrus. The taste is full, extractive and structured, supported by lively yet harmonious acidity, which guarantees freshness, a long finish and excellent aging potential. Souvignier Gris is therefore the ideal choice for winemakers seeking a sustainable path and for wine lovers who want to discover an elegant and complex white wine with character.
