The 'Groniasta' cherry (also known as Ujfehertoi Fürtös) is a proven, self-pollinating variety originating in Hungary, suitable for cultivation in most climatic regions. It is a reliable and prolific cherry tree that begins to bear fruit in the second or third year after planting. It has good resistance to frost and common diseases, making it an ideal choice for home and organic cultivation.
The tree has medium to strong growth, a spreading crown, and good fruit-bearing wood formation. The fruits ripen in the second half of July. They are medium to large (6-7 g), with dark red, firm and shiny skin. The flesh is juicy, red, sweet and sour in taste, with excellent flavor properties. The fruits are resistant to cracking and tolerate harvesting and transport well. They are suitable for direct consumption, freezing, preserving, jam production, and cherry brandy.
The mahaleb rootstock (Prunus mahaleb) ensures good viability, long life, and drought resistance. It is particularly suitable for lighter, permeable soils and also tolerates less fertile sites well. Trees on this rootstock grow to a height of approximately 4 to 5 meters and require regular pruning to maintain a balanced crown and abundant harvest.
