Medlar (Mespilus germanica) 'Dutch Giant' ('Hollandi óriás')
Old Dutch variety with giant fruits and high ornamental value.
'Dutch Giant' (also known as 'Hollandi óriás') is an old and widespread medlar variety originating from the Netherlands. It is sought after not only for its huge fruits, which are among the largest of all medlars, but also for its attractive appearance in the garden. The fruits are rich in Vitamin C, iron, and calcium, but require bletting (softening) or frost before consumption.
Main advantages of the variety:
- Giant fruits (50 – 60 g).
- High content of vitamins and minerals.
- Self-fertility and high yield.
- Ornamental value (large flowers, autumn leaf color).
- Low maintenance and no pruning required.
Origin and Registration
- Country of origin: Netherlands
- History: Old known variety.
Variety Characteristics
Tree
- Vigor: Can grow up to 5 meters. The crown is wide, spreading, and provides shade.
- Leaves and Flowers: Large leaves (up to 10 cm), turning orange in autumn. Blooms in late spring with large white flowers.
Fruit
- Size and Weight: Very large, 50 – 60 g.
- Shape and Color: Flattened sphere, light brown color (reddish blush on the sunny side).
- Flesh: Hard and astringent after harvest. After bletting (softening), it becomes soft, mushy, sweet-sour, and very tasty. Contains large seeds.
- Usage: Fresh consumption (after softening), jams, wine, desserts.
Resistance and Requirements
- Requirements: Undemanding, prefers sunny and sheltered locations, loamy and moist soils.
- Resistance: Usually not affected by pests. Can be susceptible to Monilinia or fire blight.
Cultivation Recommendations
- Pollination: Self-fertile.
- Pruning: Shortening of shoots is not recommended as flower buds are at their tips (pruning reduces yield).
Harvest and Storage
- Harvest time: Late, November (ideally after the first frosts).
- Storage: Stored until soft (December – January).
