Peaches and nectarines

Peaches and nectarines (Prunus persica) are fruit trees popular for producing juicy fruit with excellent flavour and a variety of uses. Peaches have a soft, hairy skin, while nectarines have a smooth skin. However, the two species are very similar and also have identical care requirements. The fruits are rich in vitamins A, C, E and B vitamins, but they are also a source of fibre and antioxidants that support digestion, immunity and skin health. They are also beneficial as a source of potassium, phosphorus and magnesium.

Peaches and nectarines generally thrive in warmer growing regions unless the description of a particular variety states otherwise. They require a sunny, warm site and loamy, sandy loam, well-drained soil. Regular irrigation during dry periods is important as the trees are sensitive to water deficit. Regular pruning in spring helps to keep the tree healthy and ensures a bountiful harvest. The fruit ripens during the summer. They are eaten raw, but are equally popular as an ingredient in fruit pies, cocktails, marmalades and juices. Peaches can be boiled or dried. They are used in both cold and hot cuisine. Trees of this species form an important aesthetic element of the garden in spring because of the unmissable profusion of pink flowers. Some species also attract attention with their crown and characteristic elongated foliage. Preventive care will prevent the development of leaf curl. 

By purchasing a container tree, you get a full-sized tree with intact roots that can be planted at virtually any time of the year (outside of the frozen months). Container trees tolerate transport better, the tree experiences less stress and is less susceptible to root breakage.
