1. Elite and Proven Columnar Apples – Maximum Harvest in a Minimum Space

Columnar apple trees are the ideal solution for modern gardens. We present to you three Latvian champions.

'Anda' (D-1-94-24) – An Elite Winter Newcomer

This is the pinnacle of the breeding pyramid. An elite variety means it has undergone years of testing and was selected as the absolute champion. 'Anda' is a vigorous columnar apple tree with large, attractive red fruits that can be stored in a cellar until March! The flesh is firm, juicy, and has a specific, very good sweet-tart taste. The flowers are fully frost-resistant, and the entire plant has good disease resistance.

Variety Profile: 'Anda'

  • Type: Elite Columnar Variety
  • Season: Winter (harvest in October, eat from December)
  • Fruit: Large, red, with a unique taste.
  • Storability: Excellent (until March).
  • Key Feature: Elite variety status and long storage life.

'Baiba' – The Frost-Hardy and Proven Classic

'Baiba' is a popular and time-tested columnar variety that combines very good frost hardiness with delicious fruits. The apples are medium to large, with an attractive red striping over a yellow background. Its greatest benefit is its soft, creamy, and very juicy flesh with an excellent sweet-tart, aromatic flavor. It is a reliable choice for gardeners in colder regions, but it does have a tendency for alternate bearing (fruiting every other year).

Variety Profile: 'Baiba'

  • Type: Proven Columnar Variety
  • Season: Autumn (harvest in September)
  • Fruit: Large, yellow-red, striped.
  • Taste: Excellent, sweet-tart, very juicy and aromatic.
  • Key Feature: High frost hardiness and great taste.

'Ciepa' (D-7-94-10) – The Elite Summer Treat

Another elite variety from Pūre, this time for summer. 'Ciepa' produces large, attractive fruits with snow-white flesh and a sweet-tart, aromatic flavor with a light wine-like note. Its biggest secret is that it achieves the best taste when left to fully ripen on the tree. It stands out for its very good frost hardiness and excellent resistance to scab.

Variety Profile: 'Ciepa'

  • Type: Elite Columnar Variety
  • Season: Summer (harvest in mid-August)
  • Fruit: Large, greenish-yellow with red stripes.
  • Storability: Good for a summer apple (1–2 months).

'Baltais Dzidrais' ('White Transparent') – The Immortal Summer Classic

No list of Baltic varieties would be complete without 'Baltais Dzidrais', known in many regions as 'Papirovka' or 'White Transparent'. It is the most widespread Latvian variety in the world and remains the undefeated king of early summer apples. The fruits are juicy, with a refreshing sweet-tart taste, ideal for the first summer pie, applesauce, or simply for biting into right under the tree. It is a reliable, productive, and sufficiently hardy variety that belongs in every proper garden.

Variety Profile: 'Baltais Dzidrais'

  • Type: Classic Tree
  • Season: Early Summer (late July / early August)
  • Fruit: Medium-sized, pale yellow.

If you are looking for an apple tree whose fruit will take your breath away, 'Eksotika' is the one. This variety produces exceptionally beautiful, glossy, almost entirely dark red apples. Another surprise awaits when you cut it open – the white flesh is streaked with pink veins, creating a stunning marbled appearance. The taste is excellent, sweet with a mild acidity. The tree has a smaller, compact growth habit, making it suitable for smaller gardens.

Variety Profile: 'Eksotika'

  • Type: Compact Tree
  • Season: Autumn / Early Winter (harvest in October)
  • Fruit: Very attractive, dark red, glossy.
  • Storability: Good (until January/March).
