Walnut (Juglans regia) 'Milotai 10'

A world-famous Hungarian classic featuring a thin shell, high kernel yield, and premium light-colored kernels.

The 'Milotai 10' variety is a time-tested gem among walnuts. It is one of the most respected Central European varieties due to its consistent quality and excellent flavor properties. The nuts stand out with a beautiful spherical shape and a thin shell, housing a plump, light-colored kernel. It is an ideal choice for home gardens and commercial orchards where reliable productivity and high aesthetic value are required.

Main advantages of the variety:

  • Premium Quality: Thin shell and a high kernel yield (up to 48%).
  • Plump Kernels: Attractive light color and a delicate, finely aromatic flavor.
  • Flower Hardiness: Very good ability of flowers to withstand spring frosts.
  • Easy Processing: The nuts are very easy to crack (suitable for both manual and mechanical cleaning).
  • Increased Yield: Partially bears on lateral buds (10 – 25%), which significantly boosts total production.
  • Self-fertile and regular bearer.

Origin and Breeding

  • Origin: Hungary (Milota village). Bred by Dr. Péter Szentiványi, one of the most prominent European walnut breeders.

Variety Characteristics

Tree
  • Vigor and Habit: Medium vigor with a moderately spreading crown that is relatively easy to maintain through pruning.
  • Flowering and Pollination: Blooms mid-early (April). The variety is partially self-fertile, though a pollinator nearby can maximize the crop.
Fruit
  • Size and Shape: Medium to large nuts (approx. 34 mm in diameter). They have a regular, almost perfectly spherical and neat shape.
  • Shell and Kernel: The shell is thin and smooth. The kernel is light, full, and has an excellent walnut aroma.
  • Usage: Universal – excellent for fresh consumption, drying, and as a premium ingredient for baking and confectionery.
Resistance and Requirements
  • Frost: Resistance of flowers to late spring frosts is high. The overall winter hardiness of the wood is rated as medium.
  • Location: Best results are achieved in good climatic conditions; in extremely cold and unsheltered areas, the wood may suffer damage during severe winters.
Harvest and Yield
  • Harvest Time: Early to mid-early variety. Fruits ripen in the second half of September.
  • Yield: Excellent and stable. Thanks to the high-quality kernel, the nuts maintain their flavor profile for a long duration during storage.
