Walnut (Juglans regia) 'Milotai Bőtermő'

"The Fertile of Milota" – a Hungarian legend prized for record-breaking yields, large nuts, and a broad ornamental crown.

The 'Milotai Bőtermő' variety is one of the most distinguished European walnut cultivars. It has built its reputation on its exceptionally high and stable productivity, driven by its rare ability to bear fruit on lateral buds. It combines the attractive appearance of large nuts with a thin shell and an excellent flavor profile rich in nutrients. In addition to a bountiful harvest, the tree serves a great aesthetic purpose – its broad, dense canopy provides perfect shade during the summer.

Main advantages of the variety:

  • Record Yields: Bears fruit on both terminal and lateral buds, dramatically increasing total production.
  • Large Fruits: Nuts with a diameter of up to 38 mm, ranking among the largest Hungarian classics.
  • Self-Fertility: Reliably sets crops even when planted as a single standalone tree.
  • High Kernel Recovery: Premium light-colored kernels fill 46 – 48% of the nut.
  • Easy Shelling: The thin shell allows for easy and comfortable nut cleaning.
  • Excellent taste and high ornamental value.

Origin and Breeding

  • Origin: Hungary (Milota village). Developed by the renowned expert Dr. Péter Szentiványi.

Variety Characteristics

Tree
  • Vigor and Habit: A vigorous tree with a massive, densely foliated, and broad spreading crown.
  • Flowering and Pollination: Blooms mid-season (second half of April). The variety is fully self-fertile.
  • Fruiting Type: Classified as a lateral bearer, ensuring an early start to production and high efficiency.
Fruit
  • Size and Shape: Large nuts (38 mm diameter), regularly spherical and visually very attractive.
  • Shell and Kernel: The shell is thin and relatively smooth. The kernel has a beautiful light color, is very tasty, and is rich in healthy fats.
  • Usage: A top choice for fresh consumption, drying, and professional confectionery use due to kernel quality.
Resistance and Requirements
  • Frost: Winter hardiness of the wood is moderate to high. Since it blooms in April, planting in sheltered locations is recommended in areas with frequent late spring frosts.
  • Soil: Requires deep, fertile, and well-watered soils.
Harvest and Yield
  • Harvest Time: Mid-early variety. Nuts ripen and drop from September 20 to early October.
  • Yield: One of the most productive walnuts in our climate zone.
