Black Currant (Ribes nigrum) 'Intercontinental'
Dutch variety with large fruits and high resistance.
'Intercontinental' is an excellent Dutch black currant variety, considered one of the best of its kind. It is popular for its upright and compact growth (suitable also for hedges), high yield, and large, aromatic fruits. It is characterized by robustness and resistance to diseases and drought.
Main advantages of the variety:
- Large aromatic fruits (1.5 – 2.0 g).
- High yield (up to 6 kg per bush).
- Upright and compact growth (ideal for hedges).
- High resistance to frost, drought, and powdery mildew.
- Universal use (excellent for jams and liqueurs).

Variety Characteristics
Bush
- Growth: Medium to strong, upright and compact. Has a strong root system.
- Leaves: Dark green, 3- to 5-lobed.
Fruit
- Size: Large, weighing 1.5 to 2.0 g.
- Shape and Color: Round, black, with shiny skin.
- Cluster: Shorter, contains 4 – 5 berries.
- Taste: Aromatic, sweet-sour.
- Usage: Universal. The aroma develops excellently during processing (jams, juices, liqueurs). High Vitamin C content.
Resistance and Requirements
- Resistance: Robust variety with high resistance to diseases (especially powdery mildew), pests, frost, and drought.
- Requirements: Light-loving, low maintenance. Requires permeable soil, does not tolerate waterlogging.
