Northern Highbush Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) 'Baby Blues'

A unique specialty variety with tiny, intensely flavored berries ideal for kids and baking.

'Baby Blues' is a highly specialized variety from the USA, bred with a clear goal: to produce abundant yields of very small fruits ("baby" blueberries). While the fresh market typically demands huge berries, these tiny pearls are a massive hit in the processing industry (for yogurts, muffins, and jellies) because they don't break down in batter and distribute evenly. Due to their size and intense sweet flavor, they are an absolute favorite among toddlers and young children.

Key Highlights:

  • Tiny fruits: Average width of only 10 mm (weight 0.8 g).
  • Intense flavor: Berries are very sweet and concentrated in aroma.
  • High productivity: A mature bush yields around 6 kg (significantly outperforming older small-fruited varieties).
  • Ideal for machine harvest: Fruits detach easily and cleanly.
  • Excellent plant health (resistant to viral and fungal diseases).

Origin and Registration

  • Origin: USA (USDA-ARS, Oregon/Michigan). Breeder Chad E. Finn. Patent application published in 2016.
  • Genetics: Cross of unpatented selections 'US 647' x 'US 645'.

Variety Characteristics

Bush
  • Growth: Large, vigorous, and highly vital.
  • Dimensions: Reaches approx. 1.86 m in height and 1.83 m in width.
  • Habit: Upright to slightly spreading, forming an exceptionally dense bush with numerous fine twigs.
Fruit
  • Size: Very small, nearly spherical berries.
  • Color and Quality: Purple-blue with a heavy waxy bloom. Very firm flesh with an excellent (small and dry) picking scar.
  • Taste: Excellent and highly intense.
  • Usage: Home baking (muffins, pies), jam making, and the perfect healthy snack for small children.
Resistance and Requirements
  • Frost: Good winter hardiness.
  • Diseases: Outstanding health profile. Shows no long-term signs of common fungal or bacterial infections and exhibits extreme tolerance to the Blueberry shock virus.
Cultivation Recommendations
  • Pruning: Due to its highly dense branching, the bush may require a more specific and patient thinning-out pruning approach.
Harvest and Storage
  • Harvest time: From the second half of July into early August.
  • Harvesting: Perfectly adapted for mechanical harvesting (machine shaking).
