Almond (Prunus dulcis) 'Vairo®'
Highly productive late-blooming self-fertile variety.
'Vairo®' is a modern Spanish almond variety (IRTA technology), considered along with 'Soleta' as the future of almond growing. It is very popular (also in France) for its exceptional and regular yield, self-fertility, and late flowering. The fruits have an interesting sweet taste with a hint of cocoa and spice.
Main advantages of the variety:
- Very high yield (super productive).
- Self-fertility and late flowering.
- Sweet taste with cocoa and spice notes.
- Tolerance to diseases (Fusicoccum, Red leaf blotch).
- Kernels without doubles (0.1%).
Origin and Registration
- Country of origin: Spain (IRTA)
Variety Characteristics
Tree
- Vigor: Very vigorous, maintains an optimum balance between production and growth. Easy to train and prune.
- Flowering: Late (similar to 'Guara').
- Bearing: Precocious onset, very high capacity and regularity (low alternate bearing).
Fruit
- Size: Medium kernel (1.2 g).
- Shape and Color: Cordate, light brown color.
- Shell: Hard, light green husk separates easily. Shelling percentage 29%.
- Kernel: Attractive, smooth skin, without double kernels.

- Harvest: Easy, nuts keep attached to branches but drop easily when shaking.
