Plum (Prunus domestica) 'Silvia'
Romanian August variety with large and crunchy fruits.
'Silvia' is a high-quality Romanian plum variety bred at the Piteşti – Mărăcineni institute by crossing ‘Renclod Althan’ and ‘Early Rivers’. It is particularly popular as a table variety due to its large, attractive fruits with crunchy flesh.
Main advantages of the variety:
- Large fruits (around 55 g).
- Excellent crunchy and juicy flesh.
- Attractive appearance with thick bloom.
- Good pollinator for other varieties.
- Resistance to Red leaf spot.

Variety Characteristics
Tree
- Vigor: Medium.
- Crown: Pyramidal, sparse.
- Fruiting: Bears fruit on short spurs.
Fruit
- Size and Weight: Large, weighing around 55 g.
- Shape and Color: Ellipsoidal (oval). The skin is purple-blue, covered with a thick layer of grey-blue bloom.
- Flesh: White-yellowish, crunchy, and juicy.
- Taste: Pleasant, very good.
- Stone: Separates easily from the flesh (Freestone).
- Usage: Primarily for fresh consumption (excellent table variety).
Resistance and Requirements
- Disease resistance: Resistant to Red leaf spot (Polystigma rubrum). It is mildly sensitive to Monilinia and Plum Pox Virus (PPV).
Cultivation Recommendations
- Flowering: Early.
- Pollination: Partially self-fertile. It is also a good pollinator for other varieties.
- Suitable pollinators: ‘Anna Spath’, ‘Stanley’, ‘Renclod Althan’, ‘Early Rivers’.
