Raspberry (Rubus idaeus) 'Malling Promise'

One of the best early summer varieties with abundant yields and high resilience.

'Malling Promise' is a traditional and highly productive English variety that ranks among the top early summer raspberries worldwide. It is a summer-bearing (floricane) variety, meaning it fruits on last year's wood (not everbearing). Gardeners love it for its low maintenance – it tolerates poorer soils, is extremely vigorous, and highly resistant to common diseases. It rewards growers with a heavy and very early harvest of beautiful, glossy fruits with excellent flavor.

Key Highlights:

  • Very early harvest: The crop begins ripening as early as mid-June.
  • Low maintenance & resilient: Tolerates poorer soils and does not suffer from common diseases.
  • High yield: Ranked among the most heavily cropping cultivars.
  • Large, glossy, and firm fruits with excellent taste.
  • Ideal for home gardens and processing.

Origin and Registration

  • Origin: Great Britain (England).

Variety Characteristics

Bush
  • Growth: Quite vigorous, upright (less spreading to the sides). Grows to a height of 1.5 to 2 meters.
  • Canes: The stems are thorny.
  • Pollination: The variety is self-fertile.
Fruit
  • Size and Shape: Large (some sources state medium-large), firm fruits of elongated, conical shape.
  • Color: Deep red with a beautiful glossy surface.
  • Taste: Pleasant, aromatic, with a sweet aroma and a subtle tart undertone.
  • Usage: Excellent for fresh consumption as well as home processing.
Resistance and Requirements
  • Diseases: Very resistant to common raspberry diseases.
  • Soil: Tolerates poorer soils. However, it thrives best in humus-rich, well-drained, and slightly moist soil (pH 5.5–6.5). Intolerant of heavy, waterlogged ground.
  • Location: Full sun to partial shade, with adequate air circulation.
Cultivation Recommendations
  • Planting: Spaced 40–60 cm apart in a row. Plant about 5 cm deeper than they grew in the nursery.
  • Pruning (Important): Because it is a summer-bearing variety, it fruits on two-year-old wood (floricanes). Immediately after the summer harvest, the old (fruited) canes must be completely removed at ground level. Only the strong, new primocanes of the current year are left to produce the crop next year.
Harvest and Storage
  • Harvest time: Very early variety, ripening from mid-June to mid-July.
