Raspberry (Rubus idaeus) 'Schönemann'

Classic German variety with a long harvest period and large, aromatic fruits.

'Schönemann' is a traditional, time-tested German variety of red raspberry. It is a summer-bearing (floricane) raspberry, meaning it produces fruit on the previous year's (two-year-old) canes. It is highly valued for its reliability, vigorous growth, and abundant, annual yields. It features excellent frost resistance and high disease immunity, allowing it to be grown completely without chemicals. It is also suitable for sheltered, higher-altitude locations.

Key Highlights:

  • Long harvest period: Fruits gradually ripen throughout July and August.
  • Abundant yield: Vigorous growth ensures regular and high yields.
  • Large fruits: Firm and dark red, with a typical raspberry aroma.
  • Resilience: Highly frost-hardy and disease-resistant (suitable for organic farming).
  • Excellent for both fresh consumption and processing.

Origin and Registration

  • Origin: Germany. Classic large-fruited variety.

Variety Characteristics

Bush
  • Growth: Vigorous, reaching a height of 1.5 to 2.5 m at maturity. Requires support (trellis).
  • Foliage: Green, heart-shaped leaves with toothed edges.
  • Pollination: The variety is fully self-fertile.
Fruit
  • Size and Color: Large, relatively firm fruits of a dark, deep red color.
  • Taste: Typical raspberry flavor – sweet, mildly tart, and very aromatic.
  • Usage: Great for eating fresh as well as for making jams and syrups.
Resistance and Requirements
  • Frost and Diseases: Fully winter hardy, does not suffer from common diseases.
  • Soil: Requires humus-rich, medium-heavy, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic reaction and adequate moisture. Not suited for heavy calcareous, clay, or waterlogged soils.
  • Note: When growing this variety, deep soil cultivation (hoeing) and heavy mulching should be avoided.
Cultivation Recommendations
  • Planting: Plant at a spacing of 40–60 cm. Place the root ball about 5 cm deeper than it grew in the nursery.
  • Pruning (Important): This is a summer variety that fruits on two-year-old canes (floricanes). Immediately after the harvest at the end of summer, cut the old, fruited (dry/brown) canes down to the ground. Leave only the strong, green first-year canes (primocanes), which will bear fruit the following year.
Harvest and Storage
  • Harvest time: Late summer variety. Fruits ripen gradually from mid-July to mid-August.
