Apple (Malus domestica) 'Jelgavas Vasaras'

'Jelgavas Vasaras' (meaning "Jelgava Summer") is a Latvian summer apple variety that originated as a chance seedling. It is valued for its fruits with an excellent, sweet-tart, and aromatic flavour. To achieve good fruit quality, it requires good care, especially protection against scab.

• Country of origin: Latvia
• History: A chance seedling, discovered after World War II by the fruit grower Antons Spolītis in the town of Jelgava. Registered in 1953.

• Growth: Vigorous.
• Crown: Easy to shape.

Fruit

• Size: Small to medium-sized.
• Shape and colour: Conical. Light yellow with a slight pink blush. An interesting feature is that a branch with more intensely red-coloured fruits can occasionally appear on the tree.
• Flesh: Very juicy.
• Flavour: Excellent, sweet-tart, aromatic.

• Disease resistance: More susceptible to scab.
• Requirements: Requires good care, especially fruit thinning and protection against scab.
