Apple (Malus domestica) 'Talvenauding' (Winter Delight)
One of the most important Estonian varieties with excellent frost hardiness and very high yield.
'Talvenauding' (meaning "Winter Delight") is one of the most important and widely grown winter varieties in Estonia. It is valued for its excellent frost hardiness, very high and regular yield, and fruits with a distinctive spicy flavour. Thanks to its reliability, it is also popular in Latvia and Lithuania.
Main advantages of the variety:
- Very high and regular yield (average 30–50 kg per tree).
- Excellent frost hardiness.
- Very good storability (until February-March).
- Good resistance to scab.
- Sweet-tart taste with a distinctive spicy flavour.
Origin and Registration

Variety Characteristics
Tree
- Growth: Medium-vigorous.
- Crown: The moderate crown size facilitates pruning and harvesting.
Fruit
- Size and weight: Medium-sized, with a weight of 80 – 130 g.
- Shape and colour: Conical, with distinct ribs. Yellow, covered with dark red stripes. The fruits have a bluish waxy bloom on the tree.
- Flesh: Firm, greenish-white.
- Flavour: Sweet-tart, with a distinctive spicy flavour.
- Use: Versatile, very suitable for making juices and cider.
Resistance and Requirements
- Frost resistance: Excellent.
- Disease resistance: Good resistance to scab (fruits and leaves). Medium resistance to fire blight.
Cultivation Recommendations
- Thanks to its frost resistance, it is also suitable as a rootstock.
Harvest and Storage
- Harvest time: Mid to late September.
- Storability: Very good, from November to February-March.
