Pear (Pyrus communis) 'Napoca'

Romanian summer variety with high yield and exceptional frost resistance.

'Napoca' is a high-quality summer pear variety bred at the Research Station in Cluj-Napoca. It is valued for its reliability, high productivity, and suitability for super-intensive orchards. Thanks to its late flowering, it naturally avoids spring frosts, guaranteeing regular crops.

Main advantages of the variety:

  • Very high frost resistance.
  • Late flowering (escapes spring frosts).
  • Exceptional shelf life for a summer variety (2 – 3 weeks).
  • High and early yield (up to 30 t/ha).
  • Excellent taste and melting flesh.

Variety Characteristics

Tree
  • Vigor: Medium.
  • Crown: Broadly pyramidal, sparse, and airy.
  • Bearing: Early bearing onset, highly productive.
Fruit
  • Size and Weight: Medium size, 120 – 170 g (average 130 g).
  • Shape and Color: Regular pyriform with a short neck. The skin is thin, smooth, straw-yellow, with a delicate reddish blush on the sunny side and visible dots.
  • Flesh: White-yellowish, dense but melting. Initially crisp, later very juicy.
  • Taste: Sweet, pleasantly sour, finely aromatic.
  • Storage: Exceptional for a summer variety – fruits last 2 to 3 weeks after harvest and tolerate transport well.
  • Usage: Excellent table variety, also suitable for processing (compotes).
