Grapevine (Vitis spp.) 'Sėlė'

A Lithuanian aromatic powerhouse with intense muscat-tropical notes and outstanding frost resistance.

The 'Sėlė' variety is a true sensory delight. This Lithuanian hybrid, bred by A. Gailiūnas, is famous for its strong, almost intoxicating fragrance that combines noble muscat with exotic tropical fruit notes. It is a highly productive and low-maintenance variety that easily handles harsh northern winters. Thanks to its complex aromatics, it is prized not only as a dessert grape but also as a base for unique, fresh wines.

Main advantages of the variety:

  • Exceptional Aroma: Powerful muscat fragrance with tropical fruit undertones that can be smelled from a distance.
  • High Frost Resistance: Withstands temperatures from -28 to -30 °C (-18 to -22 °F); mature vines need no winter protection.
  • Very Early Ripening: Reliably ripens even in short summers by late August or early September.
  • High Productivity: A very vital vine with an abundant fruit set.
  • Universal use for fresh consumption and aromatic winemaking.

Origin and Breeding

  • Origin: Lithuania. Breeder: Antanas Gailiūnas.

Variety Characteristics

Vine / Shrub
  • Vigor and Habit: Medium vigor with a strong tendency to thicken. Requires regular summer maintenance.
  • Wood Ripening: One-year-old shoots ripen well and early. Cuttings of this variety root very easily.
  • Pollination: The flowers are hermaphroditic, making the variety fully self-fertile.
Bunches and Berries
  • Bunches: Smaller to medium-sized (average weight approx. 70 g), dense, and cylindrical-conical in shape.
  • Berries: Medium to large (14 - 15 mm diameter), round, and light green to yellowish in color.
  • Taste and Texture: Juicy and very sweet flesh with a slightly thicker skin that easily separates during eating. The massive muscat flavor with tropical hints is the standout feature.
  • Processing: Excellent dessert grape. Wine from this variety has a strong floral and tropical aroma and is best enjoyed young.
Resistance and Requirements
  • Frost: Excellent winter hardiness (up to -30 °C / -22 °F). Well-suited for cooler viticultural regions.
  • Diseases: Resistance to downy and powdery mildew is good. However, preventive treatment before and after blooming is recommended for harvest security.
  • Location: Performs best in sunny spots protected from northern winds (e.g., near a south-facing wall).
Cultivation Recommendations (Pruning and Maintenance)
  • Pruning: A short pruning to 5 - 7 buds is recommended.
  • Summer Work: Since the vine tends to become very dense, timely removal of lateral shoots (suckering) and thinning of the bunch zone is essential.
  • Yield Regulation: To maintain vine health and berry quality, moderate crop thinning (reducing the number of bunches) is advised.
Harvest
  • Harvest Time: Early variety. Fruits ripen from late August to mid-September depending on the season.
