Family Apple Tree (4 in 1): Bumbierābele + Doch Melby + Beržeņinku Ananass + Edīte

An exceptional fruit symphony of Nordic and Russian varieties on a single trunk. Enjoy sequential ripening from August's pear-like notes through the fragrant Baltic Pineapple apple up to the winter 'Edīte' variety storable until spring.

1. Apple 'Bumbierābele' (Summer Variety)

Tallinn Pear Apple – an ancient 18th-century Estonian variety featuring a distinct and sweet pear-like flavor.

The season on this tree is opened by 'Bumbierābele' (historically known as Tallinna pirnõun). It is one of the oldest recorded northern varieties, highly prized for its exceptional flavor and used for centuries in breeding programs. It offers a unique, pear-like taste.

Main advantages of the variety:

  • Historical Gem: A traditional, time-tested landrace from Estonia.
  • Pear-like Flavor: Very sweet fruits with soft, melting flesh and a distinct pear note.
  • Hardiness: Excellent wood frost resistance.
Fruit and Harvest
  • Appearance: Medium-sized, broad-conical fruits (60 – 100 g). The greenish-yellow to whitish base color is almost completely covered with deep red and prominent striping.
  • Harvest Time: Second half of August.
  • Storability: Very short, meant for immediate consumption or quick processing.

2. Apple 'Doch Melby' (Late Summer / Early Autumn Variety)

A juicy and hardy Russian offspring of the 'Melba' apple, reliably withstanding frosts down to -35 °C.

At the turn of summer, the 'Doch Melby' variety ripens. Originating from the Leningrad region (Pavlovsk Station), it boasts exceptional frost hardiness and reliable crops of beautiful, red-blushed aromatic apples.

Main advantages of the variety:

  • Extreme frost hardiness: Withstands temperatures down to -35 °C (-31 °F), ideal for higher altitudes.
  • Large fruits: Average weight 130 g with an attractive red blush and dots.
  • High resistance: Good resistance to scab and healthy growth.
Tree and Fruit
  • Vigor and Habit: Medium vigor, forms a compact crown. Blooms with beautiful large, pink-white flowers.
  • Fruit and Flavor: Round fruits; white, very juicy, and highly aromatic flesh with a balanced sweet-sour flavor.
Harvest and Storage
  • Harvest Time: Late summer to early autumn (turn of August and September).
  • Storability: Short, meant for quick consumption or canning.

3. Apple 'Beržeņinku Ananass' (Autumn Variety)

A famous Lithuanian jewel featuring large fruits, high disease resistance, and an unsurpassed pineapple fragrance.

In early autumn, 'Beržeņinku Ananass' (syn. Beržininkų ananasas), an old variety discovered in 1886, takes the stage. It is highly valued for its large fruits, which turn a beautiful ivory color at maturity, and its excellent health profile.

Main advantages of the variety:

  • Aromatic Flavor: Outstanding, sweet-sour taste with a typical, robust pineapple note.
  • Large fruits: Average weight of up to 155 g.
  • High Resistance: Fully resistant to scab, powdery mildew, and fruit rot.
Fruit and Harvest
  • Appearance: Roundish-conical fruits, yellow to ivory with an orange blush on the sunny side. The flesh is firm and juicy.
  • Harvest Time: Late August to early September. Keeps in the cellar until December.

4. Apple 'Edīte' (Early Winter Variety)

A modern Latvian winter variety featuring bright orange-red fruits, total scab resistance, and a shelf life until spring.

The family tree is crowned by the successful Latvian breeding 'Edīte' (2012). It provides excellent, crunchy apples for the winter. It is an exceptionally healthy variety, perfect for organic growing without chemicals.

Main advantages of the variety:

  • Long storability: Apples remain in superb condition in a good cellar until February/March.
  • Flavor development: Acids break down during storage, creating a very balanced, harmonious taste.
  • 100% resistance: Fully resistant to apple scab (Vf/Rvi6 gene) and well resistant to powdery mildew and fruit rot.
Fruit and Harvest
  • Appearance and Taste: Medium to large fruits (70–80 mm). Yellow skin is covered with orange-red. Yellow flesh with a pinkish tint under the skin is firm, crunchy, and juicy.
  • Harvest Time: Early October. Fruits hang very well on the tree and do not drop.
  • Eating Maturity: Reached from November onwards. Note: Towards the end of storage in spring, the skin may tend to brown, signaling it should be consumed soon.
