Apricot (Prunus armeniaca) 'Lāsma'

A reliable Latvian variety with regular yields even in colder regions.

'Lāsma' is a valuable Latvian apricot variety, distinguished mainly by its ability to produce a regular crop almost every year, even in less favorable conditions. This is due to the long dormancy period of its flower buds, which allows them to better withstand spring weather fluctuations. The fruits are medium-sized, very beautiful, dark yellow with a red blush. The flesh is firm, aromatic, and has a good flavor. It is a reliable choice for gardeners in colder regions.

Main advantages of the variety:

  • Regular and reliable productivity: Bears fruit almost every year thanks to the long dormancy of its flower buds.
  • Good frost hardiness: Also suitable for colder regions.
  • Attractive and tasty fruits: The fruits are very beautiful and have a good, aromatic taste.
  • Good disease resistance: Resistant to shot hole disease and brown rot.
  • Versatile use: Suitable for fresh consumption and ideal for compotes.

Origin and Registration

  • Country of origin: Latvia, Dobele
  • Origin: Selected by Pēteris Upītis
  • Year of registration: 1999

Variety Characteristics

Tree

Growth is strong with a spreading crown and fine branching. It bears fruit relatively regularly almost every year. It is cross-pollinated and needs another apricot variety blooming at the same time nearby to ensure a harvest.

Fruit
  • Size: Medium-sized.
  • Shape: Round, with a relatively deep suture.
  • Appearance: Very beautiful, dark yellow with a red blush.
  • Flesh: Light orange, fine-grained, firm.
  • Taste: Good, aromatic.
  • Stone: Large, round, separates moderately well from the flesh (well at full maturity).
Resistance and Requirements
  • Frost hardiness: The wood has good frost hardiness; the flower buds are moderately resistant due to their long dormancy.
  • Disease resistance: Has good resistance to shot hole disease (clasterosporium) and moniliosis.
  • Drought resistance: Low; requires sufficient moisture.
Growing Recommendations
  • Use: Universal. This variety produces the most visually attractive compotes.
  • Harvesting: The fruits overripen quickly, so they need to be harvested at technical maturity while still firm.
Harvest and Storage
  • Harvest time: Early to mid-August. The harvest lasts for about 2 weeks.
  • Transportability: Good.
