Discover a treasure from East Asia and bring a touch of true exoticism to your garden. The Tricuspid Cudrania (Cudrania tricuspidata), also known as Che, Chinese Mulberry, or Melon Tree, is a fascinating fruit-bearing tree that will surprise you not only with its unconventional appearance but, above all, with the unique taste of its fruits. A great advantage of this particular variety is its self-pollinating nature, which means you don't need separate male and female plants. A single tree will provide you with an abundant harvest without any extra hassle.
The main attraction of the Cudrania is its fruit, which is a true culinary experience. They resemble a large raspberry or an exotic lychee and, when fully ripe from October to November, turn a deep, burgundy-red color. The round aggregate fruits, with a diameter of 2.5 to 5 cm, have juicy, deep red pulp. Their taste is exceptionally delicious and is most often described as a refreshing blend of watermelon, sweet figs, and ripe mulberries. The fruits are full of valuable antioxidants and are ideal for eating fresh-picked from the tree, as well as for preparing desserts or salads. The Cudrania belongs to the mulberry family and, in our climate, grows as a deciduous, wide shrub or a small tree, usually reaching a height of 3 to 6 meters. Its leaves resemble those of a mulberry but are lighter in color. Young shoots may have thorns, which gradually disappear with age. The plant is exceptionally resistant to diseases and pests, making its cultivation virtually trouble-free and requiring no chemical spraying.
Growing Cudrania is surprisingly simple and similar to growing a mulberry tree. For an abundant harvest and perfect ripening of the fruits, choose the warmest, sunniest, and most sheltered spot in your garden. The plant is not demanding in terms of soil; it thrives best in well-drained, lighter, and sandy soil, while also being tolerant of nutrient-poor soils. Well-rooted plants are very tolerant of drought; however, during hot summer days and while the fruit is developing, it is advisable to provide watering to prevent the dropping of unripe fruit. It is fully frost-hardy; older and well-matured plants can easily withstand frosts down to -24 °C, with some sources stating as low as -28 °C. It is advisable to protect young plants during the winter for the first few years, for example, with a non-woven fabric.
