Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) 'Tytti' (Female Variety)

Finnish elite variety with large fruits and extreme Vitamin C content.

'Tytti' is a modern female (fruiting) sea buckthorn variety originating from the premier Finnish breeding program, proudly holding the FinE® quality certificate. It stands out for its high resilience, compact growth, and above all, its large fruits that are literally a vitamin bomb – the Vitamin C content exceeds 300 mg per 100 g. Due to their distinct acidity and aroma, they are ideal for both home and commercial processing into juices and syrups.

Key Highlights:

  • Vitamin bomb: Extremely high content of Vitamin C and other valuable nutrients.
  • Large fruits: Orange berries with an average weight of 0.5 – 0.6 g.
  • Compact growth: The bush only reaches a height of 1.5 to 2 meters.
  • High resilience: Excellent frost hardiness and resistance to shoot diseases.
  • Ornamental value (silvery leaves).

Origin and Registration

  • Origin: Finland (MTT Research Institute). Released in 2000 alongside the pollinator 'Tarmo'.
  • Creation: Seeds of a natural strain were treated with X-rays (1000 roentgens) before germination to increase genetic variability.

Variety Characteristics

Bush
  • Growth: Moderate, compact, and densely branched. Reaches a height of 1.5 to 2 meters.
  • Thorns: Shoots are moderately thorny.
  • Leaves: Silvery and highly decorative.
Fruit
  • Size and Shape: Large, oval to cylindrical berries.
  • Color and Specifics: Orange. An interesting feature is the fine reddish fuzz on the surface of the berries.
  • Taste: Distinctly tart with a strong, typical sea buckthorn aroma.
  • Yield: A mature bush can be expected to yield 3 to 8 kg of fruit.
  • Usage: Juices, syrups, jams, liqueurs (processing usage).
Resistance and Requirements
  • Frost and Wind: Fully adapted to Nordic conditions. Excellently withstands frost, strong winds, and soil salinity.
  • Diseases: Excels in high resistance to shoot canker/spotting (Stigmina sp.).
  • Location: Requires full sun.
Cultivation Recommendations
  • Pollination: This is a female variety. For fruit production, it absolutely requires a male pollinator (ideally Finnish varieties like 'Tarmo' or 'Rudolf').
Harvest and Storage
  • Harvest time: Fruits hold firmly on a very short stem. They can remain on the bush in harvest maturity for up to a month without degrading.
