Black Currant (Ribes nigrum) 'Yadrenaya'

Siberian variety with extremely large fruits, designed for the harshest conditions.

'Yadrenaya' (translated as "Vigorous" or "Sturdy") is a unique Russian variety bred in Siberia, world-famous for the size of its fruit. These are considered the largest among black currants, often reaching the size of a cherry or small plum (up to 7.8 g). It is a specific variety designed for harsh climatic conditions, excelling in resistance to frost and pests. The taste is distinctly tart and refreshing.

Key Highlights:

  • Extremely large fruits: Weight 2.5 – 5.5 g (occasionally up to 7.8 g).
  • High frost resistance: Bred in Siberia.
  • Pest resistance: Resistant to the black currant gall mite.
  • Early onset of bearing and self-fertility.
  • Firm skin and dry scar (suitable for transport).

Origin and Registration

  • Origin: Russia (M. A. Lisavenko Research Institute of Horticulture for Siberia). Breeder L. N. Zabelina. Registered in 2000.

Variety Characteristics

Bush
  • Growth: Medium vigor, limited growth (up to 150 cm). Habit is compact, rather sparse.
  • Leaves: Dark green, glossy, blistered.
  • Productivity: High (average 2.5 kg per bush), early onset of bearing.
Fruit
  • Size and Weight: Very large berries, shaped like small plums.
  • Skin: Thick, firm, and fleshy. Black color with a faint gloss.
  • Taste: Refreshing, tart (acidic). Sugar content approx. 9%, acid 3.7%.
  • Usage: Universal – visually attractive due to size, suitable for freezing and processing.
Resistance and Requirements
  • Resistance: The variety is resistant to the black currant gall mite and powdery mildew. In wet years, it may be susceptible to anthracnose.
  • Frost: High resistance, suitable for cold regions.
