The 'Arapaho' blackberry is an exceptional variety bred at the University of Arkansas in the USA in 1982 and registered in 1993. It originated from a cross between the Ark. 631 and Ark. 883 varieties.
This variety is characterized by medium vigor and produces upright, thornless canes, which significantly facilitates harvesting. It has an excellent suckering ability, quickly forming dense blackberry patches. Winter pruning of the spent wood is essential to maintain vitality and productivity.
'Arapaho' is a self-fertile variety that blooms from May to June. It fruits on two-year-old canes, and its yield is stable.
The fruits are medium-sized, weighing 4-7 grams, with a shiny, conical shape and firm flesh. Their taste is exceptionally sweet (with a sugar content of 4.8-9.6%), very aromatic, and they contain only small seeds. They also boast a high vitamin C content, reaching up to 48 mg per 100 grams of fruit.
Fruit ripening is early to mid-early, occurring from late July to late August, approximately 11 days before the Navaho variety, and lasts for just under four weeks.
The uses of 'Arapaho' are very versatile. The fruits are ideal for fresh consumption, freezing, or further processing into jams and preserves. Due to their firmness, they tolerate transport well and have excellent storage capabilities.
For optimal growth and yield, 'Arapaho' requires a sunny location, ideally with a southern or southeastern exposure. The soil should be well-drained, loamy, rich in organic matter, and weed-free. Regular hoeing or mulching is necessary. During dry periods, regular watering is essential. Soil quality can be improved by incorporating well-rotted manure or compost. This variety is suitable for warm and sheltered, moderately warm areas.
'Arapaho' is moderately frost-hardy (withstanding temperatures down to at least -24 °C) and shows moderate resistance to gray mold (Botrytis cinerea). It also tolerates drought very well.
