Pear (Pyrus communis) 'Pepi'

An Estonian self-fertile pear with delicious, melting flesh.

'Pepi' is a unique Estonian autumn pear variety that is the ideal solution for any garden. Its greatest advantage is its ability of parthenocarpy – it can produce fruit even without pollination, meaning it does not require a pollinator. The fruits are medium-sized and sweet, with white, melting flesh almost entirely free of unpleasant stone cells. Thanks to its excellent frost resistance, early entry into bearing, and compact growth, it is a reliable and low-maintenance variety that will yield a harvest even where there is only space for a single tree.

Main advantages of the variety:

  • Self-fertility (Parthenocarpy): Reliably produces fruit every year, even without another pear tree nearby.
  • Excellent flesh quality: Melting, sweet, and juicy, with almost no "grit."
  • Excellent frost resistance: A dependable choice even for colder locations.
  • Early entry into bearing: Produces its first harvest in just the 2nd or 3rd year after planting.
  • Compact growth: Its weaker growth makes it suitable for smaller gardens.

Origin and Registration

  • Country of origin: Estonia
  • Breeders: Kalju Kask, Aleksander Siimon
  • Year of registration: 1998

Variety Characteristics

Tree

Growth is weaker but upright, which makes maintenance easier. It comes into bearing very early and produces high and regular yields. It does not require a pollinator to set fruit.

Fruit
  • Size: Medium-sized (50–70 g).
  • Skin: Greenish-yellow to yellow, with a red blush on the sunny side.
  • Flesh: White, melting (buttery), sweet, and almost free of stone cells.
  • Note: Fruits that develop without pollination are seedless and have an elongated shape.
Resistance and Requirements
  • Frost resistance: The variety has excellent frost resistance.
  • Diseases: It has medium resistance; in unfavorable years, it can be more susceptible to pear scab.
Growing Recommendations
  • Use: An ideal dessert variety for fresh consumption. Also suitable for making juices and baby food.
  • Suitability: The perfect choice for gardeners who only want to plant a single pear tree.
Harvest and Storage
  • Harvest time: Mid-September.
  • Eating maturity: Immediately after harvest.
  • Storability: Short; intended for immediate consumption (a few weeks).

Guarantee of Authenticity: Many different varieties are often sold under the name 'Pepi'. We guarantee the delivery of the authentic Estonian parthenocarpic 'Pepi' variety.
