Pear (Pyrus communis) 'Suvenīrs'

A Latvian self-fertile variety with an unbeatable taste in any weather.

'Suvenīrs' is a legendary and highly valuable Latvian autumn variety, considered unbeatable by growers for its taste. Its greatest asset is its consistently excellent, sweet, and melting flavor, which it maintains every year, regardless of whether the summer was sunny or rainy. The variety is self-fertile, fully frost-hardy, and extremely productive. Due to its heavy fruit set, fruit thinning is crucial to ensure large, high-quality pears.

Main advantages of the variety:

  • Guaranteed sweet taste: Excellent and stable flavor every year, regardless of the weather.
  • Self-fertile: Reliably produces fruit even without another pear tree nearby.
  • Excellent flesh quality: Buttery, melting, juicy, and completely free of stone cells.
  • Fully frost-hardy: Withstands even severe winter frosts, proven in Latvian conditions.
  • Extremely high productivity: Thinning is necessary to achieve large fruits.

Origin and Registration

  • Country of origin: Latvia
  • Breeder: Jānis Biks
  • Cross: ‘Sēklaudzis No. 9’ × ‘Clapp’s Favourite’
  • Year of registration: 1968

Variety Characteristics

Tree

Growth is medium-strong; the crown is pyramidal in youth, later becoming rounded. It is self-fertile and extremely productive, therefore it requires essential fruit thinning; otherwise, the fruits will remain small and grow in "clusters."

Fruit
  • Size: Medium to very large (only after thorough thinning).
  • Skin: Yellow-green, with an orange-red blush on the sunny side.
  • Flesh: White, melting (buttery), sweet, without stone cells.
  • Taste: Excellent, sweet, with a typical pear aroma. Its flavor is consistently outstanding every year.
Resistance and Requirements
  • Frost hardiness: The variety is fully frost-hardy.
  • Diseases: It has good resistance to scab and fruit rot.
Growing Recommendations
  • Use: A top-quality dessert variety for direct autumn consumption. Excellent for juices and baby food.
  • Fruit thinning: This is crucial to achieve large, high-quality fruits. Excess fruits are removed, leaving only one, or at most two, of the best ones in a cluster.
Harvest and Storage
  • Harvest time: During September.
  • Eating maturity: Ripens shortly after harvest.
  • Storability: Short; intended for immediate consumption (2–3 weeks).
